Dutch writer Tonke Dragt wrote two books about the young knight Tiuri and his friend Piak. This is the second one, a sequel to "De brief voor de koning" (The letter for the king): Secrets of the Wild Woods. An old friend of Tiuri has set out to unravel the mysteries of the Wild Woods, but has never returned. When Tiuri tries to find him, he discovers that the Woods, about which various scary legends are told, house a very real danger: the armies of Eviellan, intent on conquering the Realm of Unauwen. Tonke Dragt's tale is a genuine fantasy, except that there are no mythical creatures or deeds of magic in it. She concentrates wonderfully of building up her characters. From the point of view of Tiuri and Piak you get to look at the tragedy that occurred between the two sons of King Unauwen, and the mysteries of the Wild Woods. Excellent supporting characters complete the story to a gripping whole. Once you read this book, you will never forget it.

I totally agree with the other reviewer and think this book deserves 5 stars. It's the best book I read in Dutch when I was a kid, I even like it better than the first part De brief voor de koning, which is also excellent. I still like to read parts of it once in while now when I'm over 40. I hope one day it will be discovered by an editor who haves both books translated in English so it can find more readers in the whole world. It's a classic and also a bit tragic story about war amongst brothers, brave knights, growing up and discovering love and hate, mysterious dark woods and its magical inhabitants, poisonous weapons and a hermit in the mountains that proves to be the wisest of them all. Beautiful illustrations and map by the author. Recommended !
