My favorite genre is humor, not knee slapping Three Stooges wacky, but dry, wickedly witty, original lines that come out of left field. I knew The Reluctant Jesus was going to be my kind of book when I read the sample chapters, but had no idea author Whitehead would have me laughing out loud long after I should have turned out the lights. It's not like I have nothing better to do at night.

I'm preaching to the choir when I say The Reluctant Jesus is funny as Hell, since other reviewers here are sharing Whitehead's original lines that made them laugh out loud, snort snot and all that jazz. I read TRJ slowly due to family caretaking, however am glad I didn't rush through the hilarity on the pages of this succinctly written gem. l will read it again, something that is rare for me.

On the thirty-third birthday of lead protagonist, Seth Miller, it's revealed by his parents that God spoke to his mother before he was conceived, telling her she would birth the next Messiah. As a virgin, just like Mary, of course. Virgin parents? Seth becoming the New Jesus? Stunned as all get out, Seth is sure his parents are off the trolley until their story gets corroborated by God himself. Well, not exactly, since it's God ala talking cat, Walter. The hesitant bachelor, baseball and beer lover, accepts his challenge, only to have his first few attempts at miracles go awry. Add the transformation of Seth's friends into illustrious biblical characters from Mary Magdalene to Lucifer, and a gang of non-biblical characters more colorful than Joseph's coat. I lived in NYC during Giuliani's mayorialship, and had to smile at how Whitehead's writing transported me all around the globe like the most exhilarating roller coaster I've ever been brave enough to board.

Imagine if you will, a Twilight Zone episode in which a train marked "Destination Unknown" emerges out of nowhere, and your desire to deviate from the norm trumps your trepidation... If you're smart, you'll jump on and grab a front row seat (it's okay to utter a quick prayer to the God or Gods of your choice). The Reluctant Jesus is one hellva crazy ride, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. It'll be gifted to my fun, intellectual, open-minded friends!

The Reluctant Jesus Duncan Whitehead 9781457527043 Books Reviews

Who doesn’t need a good laugh these days! After a stressful week of “what will go wrong next” I sure did. And Duncan Whitehead’s book was just the entertaining pick me up I sorely needed. This clever satire is about Seth Miller who learns on his 33rd birthday that he is the Messiah. Oh, and there’s a talking cat. Being a crazy cat lady myself, I was hooked. This one is funny, and food for thought as well. I received an advance reading copy for an objective review and I enjoyed the book so much, I came back and bought a copy so I could read the final version. I can honestly say, I recommend this book highly.
This book has so many reviews already that the author does not need mine. Nevertheless, I would like to share my thoughts about it....
The second coming of Jesus -- or not? -- and the final battle between right and wrong -- or good and evil -- has been already dealt with in writing and movies. Though the wit and imagination that Duncan Whitehead got into action to produce a fun read is worth mentioning.
The whole plot was so enjoyable that a few grammatical errorsI spotted did not decrease my merryment.
Funny, quirky and slightly irreverent. It is, after all, a satire, so read with caution if you are easily offended. Does the average Joe have what it takes to win the battle of Armageddon and save the world from an evil end? Find out what happens when a man discovers out he is the second son of God and has to carry the burden of doing just that, and with only a few weeks to prepare.
This is the first book by the author that I have read, but I will be reading more for sure. Some laugh out loud moments and some moments when you just shake your head at the absurdity of it all. I really enjoyed the interaction between God and Satan, and how they were nothing like you'd expect them to be. )
This whimsical and often hilarious "memoir" of the "other Son of God"--the "second-begotten" -relates the life narrative of a thirty-two-year old male Jewish architect, very successful, living in Greenwich Village. Why is his age important? Well, remember what happened to Jesus when he turned thirty-three. Seth Miller, who considers his life actually perfect, is beyond astounded when his parents, Irma and Ely, announce that Seth is the second Son of God. What's worse is the direct revelation from the deity--presented here as forgetful, not fully in control, and often absent, that Seth must battle the Anti-Christ in Armageddon. Despite the fact that he persistently reveals himself as a little too shallow, Seth does possess a core of persistence and determination--both of which will be sorely in demand as he strives to cope with this all-new set of pressures.

I reviewed a copy provided to me for the sole purpose of my review. No fees were exchanged.
Hilarious! Loved it! The book itself deserves a 5-plus review but the author needs to study grammar and punctuation.

I really admire this author (and others) who can create a great story. This book was well written, but I can't ignore the dozens of errors with the personal pronoun "I" used as the object of a preposition. For example, "...the deal secured by Henry and I." ARRRRGH!

Other errors were of punctuation, and ..."maybe you're real Father..."

The book itself deserves a 5-plus rating, but for heaven's sake (tongue in cheek), Mr. Whitehead, either study grammar and punctuation or get a good editor. (And it has been demonstrated with other books that finding a good editor/proofreader is apparently not easy.)

As an aside, a pet peeve of mine is the popular use of "African-American" for people who have never been near Africa. "Politically correct" in many ways is taken WAY too far.
